Every day we use words to communicate with each other, but how often do we pause to consider the meaning of what we've said? Language has always challenged me. Even now, when I am writing a draft of a story, I have to consult the fifteen pound Webster's in our home, to see if I really know the meaning of a word I have used all my life. Sometimes, I find that I have been using it incorrectly. And, that sets me to thinking.
The idea of imagination has always been a part of me for as long as I can remember. My over active imagination was always leading me down its merry path. In school, I was the daydreamer, who looking out those glorious 4' x 8' double hung windows, would create wondrous worlds filled with friends and far off places. Of course, it didn't help me much in school, as I often never heard what the teacher was talking about. Years later, I learned that the world values those 'imagineers', whether it is with words or things. Now that I have the time to put words to the ideas that my imagination conjures up, I find it refreshingly difficult to shape the words into a form, which brings life to the images/ideas in my head. Here is where Webster makes me laugh. In seeking out one word, I am happily led down the path of many more, sometimes they are way more difficult words to understand - words that my friends in high school all knew on their SAT tests. Lucky them. So, how does this relate to my stories? Well, Grading Scale is a window into my mind about the things in life that are unseen by the eye, but are always at work in our world, whether we believe that to be true or not. It's not every day you could spot an Angel on the street, but they are there - on the job. To me, even though unseen, they are just as real as you and I. Grading Scale took the viewpoint from both sides - ours and theirs - and together with a dash of imagination, the story's intent was to bring us all closer together as people. On The Way Home is simply my old fashioned way of thinking about what it means to be President of the United States. You know, truth, honor, integrity, that kind of stuff. Are they unrealistic? Perhaps, but I don't think so. And neither do a lot of other people. America is a grand experiment in the world, and a lot of nations look to see how we're doing because of the standards we have set for our nation. The Office of the President is but one of many. It is however, the seat of, the leader of the free world. That being said, I believe that it is incredibly important for the President to live up to the standards set by some of greatest leaders. I don't think it's asking too much, and neither did some reviewers on Amazon. Words really do matter. They are what create our reality. And imagination, is the tool we use to see into the future. So, on this Easter Sunday when I began writing this little blurb, and hopefully continue, it is my intent to blog on the stories I am writing, and post updates/news items. I look forward to your comments and will respond in a timely fashion.
